Legal AssistantPosition OverviewThe United Community Housing Coalition (UCHC) Legal Assistant will work in cooperation with legal staff of UCHC and Michigan Legal Services (MLS), particularly attorneys, and others as necessary to address eviction cases and other landlord/tenant matters.ResponsibilitiesInterview clients who have a pending eviction orotherlandlord/tenant relatedissues.Prepare intake internal paperworktimely,completely and accurately.Draft and filelegal documents with the appropriate government agencies.Draft correspondence to clients andappropriategovernment agencies.Assistclientsin addressing the landlord/tenant issue.Assistance may include:negotiatingwith the landlordon behalf of the tenantto addressrepairneeds, resolution of eviction, restoration or possession to property,thereturn of security deposits,and dates to vacateunit;connectingto social services workersto resolveissueswith the stateand ensureclient issupportedeffectively;attending client court hearingstoassistthem clientinarticulating theirarguments;drafting letters to landlords, housing inspectors, and variousgovernmentaloffices;drafting of pleadings for court under thesupervision of staffattorneys;performing other landlord/tenant related tasks as assigned by theexecutivedirector orprogramcoordinator.Perform legal research.Collect and track documents for client projects.Assist with administrative tasks as needed.Maintainconfidentialityof client information.Refer cases in need of legal help or with more complexissues to appropriate legal staff, andredirect issuesbeyond legalscopeto appropriateUCHCstaff.Maintain case and contactrecords in suitablefilesforefficiency of communication.Be aware of the programs and policies of UCHC andexternal programs thatprovide comprehensive assistance to your clients.Perform other housing related tasks asneededandasassigned by the executive director.Preferred QualificationsThe successful candidate will believe in UCHCs mission and demonstrate a passion for driving the organizations growth.
