Pharmacy Director


The UAW Retiree Medical Benefits Trust (henceforth “the Trust”) provides health care benefits for retired UAW members of General Motors, Ford and Chrysler, along with their eligible dependents.

We are currently seeking a Pharmacy Director. The Pharmacy Director manages the pharmacy benefit to execute the Trust’s drug strategy across both the medical and pharmacy benefits, to improve member experience, achieve cost savings, and improve and clinical quality of care.

Essential Functions:

  • Supports the collaboration among the Trust’s internal and external stakeholders/vendors, principally its PBM and Medical Carriers, to collectively evaluate industry best practices for drug management, identify opportunities for enhanced management, evaluate possible solutions and drive approved solutions forward in coordination with the Chief Pharmacy Director
  • Responsibilities include but are not limited to develop and manage custom formularies, review rebate scenarios and modeling to optimize pharmacy benefit spend
  • Oversees formulary management and submission with the PBM
  • Drive efforts related to medications to evaluate and recommend changes to improve pharmacy spend
  • Support the Chief Pharmacy Director to effectively manage the Trust’s total drug management program, monitor the terms and performance of the PBM and Medical Carrier
  • Ensures regulatory compliance with EGWP and Medicare Part D plans
  • Leads specific pharmacy initiatives as directed
  • Fiscally responsible for department and prescription drug benefit budget
  • Creates internal control process framework for risk assessment
  • Engage with a cross-functional team of professionals, across the Population Health, Strategic Innovation, Finance, Carrier Services, Compliance, Corporate Governance and Washington DC Liaison, and other relevant departments within the Trust, to drive an integrated, population-based approach to health care for the Trust’s beneficiaries
  • Engage in the Trust’s PBM RFP / market check process, audit, and leadership, clinical, and operations meetings
  • Monitor the contract, terms and performance of pharmacy providers
  • Mentors junior team members

Technical Competencies:

  • Demonstrated ability as an effective leader and communicator, capable of fostering cooperative working relationships among an integrated team of professionals
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply industry best practices in accordance with regulations and programs, specifically Medicare Part D
  • Proven capabilities in strategic planning and project management

Minimum Experience Required:

  • Pharmacy benefit and managed care administration.
  • Demonstrated results with targeted utilization management tools and effective outcomes.

Education, Professional Certifications and Licensure:

  • PharmD Degree or equivalent and State Board Certified Licensed Pharmacist
  • Minimum of 7-10 years healthcare and leadership experience within a Health Plan or a Pharmacy Benefit Manager
  • Minimum 3-5 years’ direct experience in Formulary and Specialty Drug Management, or equivalent
