Job Summary:
The Director serves the school as leader, advisor, advocate, and institutional resource overseeing the implementation of the school’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. In alignment with the School’s mission and core values, and in coordination with the school’s senior leadership team, the Director will plan and implement new and existing school-wide DEI initiatives to ensure an equitable and inclusive environment for our entire school community. As a member of the senior leadership team and reporting to the Head of School, the Director will be a listener who is passionate and knowledgeable about DEI work and a mission-focused strategic leader who will work to strengthen, build and execute a holistic, action-oriented DEI strategy for Pembroke Hill School.

Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. Advanced degree is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years as a leader or member of a diversity, equity and inclusion council, committee or board.
  • Expert verbal and written communication skills, specifically as it relates to communicating to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated leadership and facilitation skills.
  • Collaborative, resilient, flexible, diplomatic, confident and patient.
  • Proven detail-orientation and ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects.
  • Innovative and technologically savvy.
  • Managerial experience with direct reports and cross-functional teams to accomplish shared goals.
  • Knowledge of and experience with needs assessment and creative approaches to strategy development and coalition building.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership in the area of diversity and inclusion through the development and implementation of a mission-based DEI strategic plan. This will be an internally and externally focused role working in collaboration with families, businesses, corporations, foundations and community leaders/organizations.
  • Actively support the recruitment, hiring, and retention of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Person of Color) faculty and staff, create equitable opportunities for diverse candidates, foster an inclusive work environment and support the retention of historically marginalized faculty and staff.
  • In collaboration with the Office of Admissions, recruit, welcome, and retain students/families of diverse backgrounds.
  • Explore and act on opportunities to liaison with local BIPOC communities in service to the school’s outreach and admissions marketing and recruitment programs.
  • Plan, develop, and market diversity and inclusion-focused education programs, training and events for faculty, staff, students, alumni and families.
  • Plan and execute professional development opportunities and serve as consultant and advisor to the Board of Trustees and senior staff on leading teams that reflect the DEI values of the school.
  • Act as liaison to and develop relationships of trust with the diversity and inclusion-related groups within the school, including mentoring and supporting student leadership and the DEI Advisory Council.
  • Work with the communications/marketing office to review materials, to represent the school’s commitment to DEI efforts and promote diversity-related events for students, faculty, families, and the local community.
  • Network with diversity coordinators at other independent schools as well as off-campus cultural resource organizations with a focus on implementing innovative ideas and DEI best practices.
  • Partner with the development team to secure funding for the DEI Program with a special focus on increasing the level of financial awards available to BIPOC students.
  • Represent the school at local, regional, and national multicultural events as determined in conjunction with the head of school.
  • Pursue professional development opportunities; attend conferences and professional meetings to remain current on diversity and inclusion issues that may affect the school.
  • Assume responsibility for other projects as assigned by the head of school.
