Some are released to a sponsor just before their birthday; some are transferred to adult detention. In a handful of other cases, The Doors attorneys are able to secure the minors release on their own recognizance (ROR) by their 18th birthday. As the Immigrant Youth Aide, you will focus on the Centers immigration practice, specifically our work with detained minors. Unaccompanied and separated children who are apprehended by immigration authorities are held in the custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) until their 18th birthday. Minors not released to a sponsor are transferred to ICE custody on their 18th birthday. You will accompany the minors who are RORd. ICE escorts the minor to the ICE field office and then release them to a designated individual to escort them to a temporary placement or ICE will only agree to ROR if someone picks up the minor from the shelter and escorts them to a transitional living program.A couple of days after the release, the minor will require accompaniment so that they can travel to reunify with an adult caretaker. What You Will Be Doing: Travel to federal shelters in Westchester County to pick up minors, and accompany them to either The Door or another placement in New York CityHelp youth navigate airport security and other transportation logisticsComplete accurate and timely end of shift reports to Managing AttorneyCommunicate with Managing Attorney and youth during and following accompanimentsAttend all relevant meetings, trainings, workshops and outside eventsWhat We Are Looking For: Professional proficiency in Spanish requiredYou are available for late night and/or weekend shifts. You have a knack for engaging youth and the ability to apply positive youth development practices. You are organized and passionate about accuracy and meet deadlines on time all the time.
