Instructor & Forensics CoachLubbock20680BRCoMS Dept of COMS Position DescriptionContributes to the university’s mission through teaching and service, some variation by academic unit.Major/Essential FunctionsSUMMARY:The Department of Communication Studies at Texas Tech University in College of Media & Communication invites applications for the Forensics Coach beginning either January 1, 2021 or September 1, 2021.The Texas Tech debate team, housed in the Department of Communication Studies, is a nationally competitive program. The Forensics Coach is responsible for maintenance of team budgets and making travel arrangements, recruitment of undergraduate students to the team, recruitment and supervision of graduate coaching assistants, community service including the administration of high school forensic competition and promotion of local debate activities, alumni outreach and public relations, and development efforts.The position also includes teaching courses in Communication Studies as assigned by the department. The standard teaching load is four courses per academic year. The debate coach would be expected to teach the undergraduate argumentation and debate course in addition to one or two additional courses (depending on the semester). Although summer teaching is not guaranteed, it can be requested, and, when available, would warrant additional compensation.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:Candidates should have extensive coaching and teaching experience. A Master’s degree in Communication Studies is required. Candidates should have a demonstrated record of teaching excellence at the undergraduate level in a variety of contexts (face-to-face, online, hybrid) and class sizes (large lecture, lecture, and seminar). A demonstrated and ongoing commitment to serving diverse student populations is required.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Our intent is to bring outstanding and collegial faculty who value excellence in teaching, and who can make positive contributions in service, outreach, and engagement. Experience working with diverse student populations and first-generation students is highly desirable. Candidates should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a philosophy of coaching statement, a vision statement for the future of the debate program, a teaching philosophy, evidence of teaching effectiveness, three letters of recommendation, and official transcripts. The College of Media & Communication () at Texas Tech University offers bachelor’s degrees in Advertising, Communication Studies, Journalism, Creative Media Industries, Public Relations, and Media Strategies. It offers master’s degrees in Mass Communication, Communication Studies, and Strategic Communication (online), and a Ph.D. in Media and Communication. The college has more than 2,100 undergraduate majors, about 270 MA students in three programs, and 40 Ph.D. students. Recent graduates of the doctoral program have begun their careers at universities in the Big 10, Big 12, ACC, and SEC, as well as applied research positions with media companies such as the MediaScience Research Lab. As of 2019 CoMC is rated 39th in the world for communication research by the Shanghai Academic Index and rated 1st in the Texas Tech University system.Required QualificationsTerminal academic degree (or its equivalent) as defined by the academic unit and as appropriate for the position held. Ability to teach effectively. Job assignment can be full-time or part-time depending on the needs of the department.
