Carry out image processing and data analysis of coronal images from white-light instruments including PSP/WISPR and/or PUNCH; participate in development of translational tomography and other 3D inversion codes; design observing sequences for execution; publish results in the scientific literature and at scientific conferences. The person will develop with the team new image analysis tools to reconstruct 3D structure of the corona from sequence of still images. We will exploit those tools to extract cross-instrument science from Parker Solar Probe, and present those science results at conferences and in the scientific literature. May also work on development of the science pipeline for PUNCH. Show scientific insight, work semi-autonomously but with periodic supervision/meetings, be prepared to interact with other scientists in the field, and write up scientific papers for publication.
Requires a PhD degree in Solar Physics, Astronomy, Heliophysics, Physics, Space Physics, Image Processing, or Computer Science (or closely related) with 0-5 years stellar interior/stellar dynamos experience. Must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Experience in solar image processing, including current spaceborne instruments is preferred. Must be skilled in at least one or more programming languages from (Python, Perl, C, IDL). Familiarity with current “industry” standard image retrieval and processing tools, including the Virtual Solar Observatory and the ecosystem of reduction tools that are used with the current NASA fleet of spaceborne telescope is required. Must have a basic understanding of solar physics and coronal physics. Skills in scientific-grade coding is required, including tool development, regression testing, documentation, and small- to mid-scale software architecture. The work will be carried out in a combination of C and Python, in modern computing environment based around the POSIX command line. At least one publication in the scientific literature is required.
