The Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network (RMIAN) is a nonprofit organization that provides free immigration legal services to individuals in immigration detention and to childrenand their familiesthroughout Colorado.RMIANs Detention Program provides legal and social service support to individuals held at the privately-owned civil immigration detention facility located in Aurora, Colorado.RMIAN has an immediate opening for a full-timeDetained Representation Attorney Fellowtorepresent clients detainedat theAurora Contract Detention Facilityand to join its team of attorneys, social workers, and paralegals devoted to supportingpeople ensnared in the immigration detention system who are heldby Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)in Aurora, Colorado.TheDetained Representation Attorney Fellowwillprovide direct representation toDenver residentsthrough fundingfromtheDenver Immigrant Legal Services Fund. In 2017, Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock signed an executive order allocating funding to support noncitizens detained byICEat the Aurora facility who are residents of the City and County of Denver whose incomes are 200% or less of the federal poverty guidelines. The program is part of a national movement called theSAFE Initiative(Safety & Fairness for Everyone), which is an innovative collaboration between governments, advocates, and legal service providers working in unison to create a public defender system for immigrants facing deportation.This position is meant for adedicated advocate someone who hasexpertisein immigration law, particularly removal defense(preferably in a detained setting), and whowishes to engage in broaderpolicy and advocacy efforts to expand universal representation across the State of Colorado.The ideal candidate:Is an attorney who has a solid base of substantive legal knowledge ofimmigration lawwith a focus onremoval defenseand a strong commitment to immigrant justicethis person knows how to run an immigration removal case in adetainedsetting,enjoys creative lawyering,can explain the complicated process in an easily digestible manner toclients and community members,and is passionate about RMIANs work and mission.Understands how toprioritize tasks with little guidance. The ideal candidate is organized, efficient, and has a keen eye for detail. This person enjoys handling multiple cases running in parallel and is able to triage in order to meet time-sensitive deadlines.Has excellent legal research and writing skills.Isteam-oriented and works in collaboration with RMIAN staffmemberswith a focus on advancing universal representation throughout Colorado.Is skilled at building rapport withclients andtheir support networks.
