Philadelphia Legal Assistance (PLA) seeks to immediately hire two full-time attorneys for its Family Law Unit. PLA is a non-profit legal services organization primarily funded by the Legal Services Corporation. PLA views the practice of family law as an integral part of the war on poverty and family violence.This includes taking a wide variety and complex mix of family law cases such as child custody, child and spousal support, protection from abuse, and divorce.The family law practice at PLA is trauma informed and focuses on alleviating the impact of interpersonal family violence.In collaboration with Women Against Abuse, PLA has Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) funding for an attorney to provide representation in family law matters with an emphasis on custody and protection from abuse cases to victims of crime, including domestic violence and sexual assault. The PLA Family Law Unit attorney must be an active litigator with courtroom presence and good research and writing skills, empathetic to client concerns (particularly family violence), able to deal with highly emotional situations, willing to work as part of a team of attorneys and paralegals, and ability to always maintain the highest ethical standards.Due to Covid-19, the position will begin remote, but once Philadelphia Courts resume in person hearings, the attorney must be able to litigate in Philadelphia.QUALIFICATIONSLaw degree and admission to the Pennsylvania Bar.Recent law school graduates and bilingual attorneys are encouraged to apply.Prior work experience at a public interest law firm or in the area of family law preferred.Strong public speaking and writing skills required.Spanish fluency helpful, but not required.The family law unit works closely together and prioritizes teamwork.
