New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI), a community-driven civil rights organization, seeks a temporary supervising immigration attorney to work with NYLPIs Health Justice program and UndocuCare campaign. The ideal candidate will have experience providing legal representation and conducting immigration screenings, experience in immigration court, familiarity with LGBTQ and/or HIV-positive asylum seekers, knowledge of PRUCOL and experience with PRUCOL advocacy, and experience providing know-your-rights presentations. This is a temporary position available for four months, starting in March 2021.NYLPIs Health Justice work brings a racial equity and immigrant justice focus to health care advocacy in New York City and State. Of particular relevance for this position, we address the human rights crisis in immigration detention; operate a medical-legal-community partnership to increase access to healthcare in immigration detention; connect undocumented and uninsured immigrants with serious health conditions to Medicaid; and advocate for healthcare coverage for all New Yorkers. NYLPIs UndocuCare campaign provides holistic wrap-around services, comprehensive immigration and health screenings, legal representation, and organ transplant advocacy to connect seriously ill undocumented immigrant New Yorkers to healthcare.About the RoleThe temporary supervising immigration attorney will significantly contribute to the UndocuCare campaign and provide supervision for that team, as well as contribute to the Health Justice Program. The temporary supervising immigration attorney will work both independently and in collaboration with other attorneys, community organizers, and communications and lobbying experts. This position requires the equivalent of 24 to 40 hours per week, depending on availability, and could be structured on payroll or as an independent contractor.The attorney will Provide direct legal services in immigration and healthcare advocacy matters, and maintain a small caseload of immigration matters, including but not limited to providing individualized assistance to clients currently in removal proceedings or eligible for immigration relief, in a broad range of categories including U/T Nonimmigrant Status, Non-LPR Cancellation of Removal, and various family petitions. Provide PRUCOL advocacy to clients who are uninsured and make Medicaid referrals to healthcare navigators. Assist in the supervision of a legal fellow and law graduate engaged in comprehensive immigration screenings. Work with the team to ensure delivery of high-quality legal representation and wrap-around services to clients. Identify and analyze systemic issues through individual and impact casework. Participate in team and department meetings.QUALIFICATIONSRequired Member in good standing of the New York State Bar. Experience working with low-income documented and undocumented immigrants. Minimum three years of experience providing immigration legal representation, conducting immigration screenings, healthcare advocacy, and education in immigration matters. Litigation experience in Immigration Court. Experience collaborating effectively with diverse groups of individuals and organizations, and connecting and strategizing with local community leaders. Desire to mentor and support the growth and learning of supervisees and fellow immigration team staff. Desire to address systemic issues and develop general knowledge of health law. Excellent writing, editing, legal analysis, and oral presentation skills. Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Comfortable working under pressure, on a team or independently; passionate about the work, inquisitive, and analytical.Preferred Spanish language fluency. Previous nonprofit, legal services experience desirable. Experience working with TGNCI communities. Experience in or familiarity with the criminal legal system.
