The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for a Meat Plant Manager for the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology, and Natural Resources Wolf Pack Meats (WPM), a very low-volume harvesting and processing facility. *** This position does not provide layoff rights and is contingent upon funding. This position will oversee the day-to-day functions at the WPM facility. This includes working with stakeholders and university faculty and staff to oversee the slaughter and processing of various meats to meet their needs. This position is responsible for managing a self-sustaining program which meets the mission of the Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station including research, teaching, and outreach. The position is responsible for maintaining the facility in full compliance of all University, State and Federal regulations.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in animal science or closely related field and two years of experience in animal slaughter, meat inspection and meat processing, one year which included supervision; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and four years of experience as described above, one year which included supervision; OR one year of experience as a Meat Plant Supervisor in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
A valid driver’s license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.

This position requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Very heavy work requires walking or standing to a significant degree and pushing and/or pulling.
This position requires having a Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) certification at time of employment. This position requires understanding of HACCP guidelines and operating procedures.
This position requires experience working in a USDA inspected facility and understanding USDA requirements. This position requires having a strong background in meat harvesting and processing in order to understand and advise the faculty, staff and general public.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with knowledge in use of a band saw, a sausage stuffer, vacuum tumbler, Enviropack MP500, Butcher Boy grinder and/or a vacuum packager model 250-50 are encouraged to apply.


The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:00 am – 3:30 pm and 6:00 am – 2:30 pm on harvest days. The work schedule may vary, and this is subject to change based on organizational needs.
