As Maines only state-wide immigration legal services organization, the Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project (ILAP) advances justice and equity for immigrants and their families through direct legal services, community education, and systemic advocacy.Position DescriptionILAPs summer internship program offers law students an opportunity to learn more about U.S. immigration law and policy while making a difference in the lives of low-income immigrants in need of legal help.ILAP seeks a law student intern to work remotely with our legal team in summer 2021. Responsibilities will vary depending on program needs and intern skills, but can be expected to include:Assisting with preparation of humanitarian applications for relief including asylum, adjustment of status, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, VAWA self-petitions, U visas and more;Researching legal issues related to client cases;Gathering country conditions evidence to support client applications; and,Assisting with interpretation as needed.QualificationsRising 2 or 3LDemonstrated commitment to public interest law or to working with low-income populations.Personal and professional commitment to racial justice and equity.Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work well with individuals from different cultures and with varying levels of English proficiency.Strong analytical, research, and writing skills.Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft 365 and zoom.Prior experience with immigration matters is preferred, including lived experience with immigration systems.Proficiency or fluency in a relevant community language is an asset, especially French, Spanish, Portuguese or Lingala.ILAPs Commitment to DiversityILAP strongly encourages applications from people with diverse backgrounds, including immigrants, women, people of color, people with disabilities, people who identify as LGBTQ+, people from low-income backgrounds, and people with personal experience with the immigration systems.StipendILAP seeks to eliminate financial barriers to participation in our internship program and invites applicants to discuss the potential for a stipend if needed.How to ApplyPlease submit a cover letter explaining your interest in a summer legal internship with ILAP, your resume, and a legal writing sample (five page maximum) to with 2021 Summer Internship in the subject line.
