The Housing Rights Center (HRC) is seeking a Staff Attorney to join the Litigation Department. The Litigation Department focuses on civil rights/housing discrimination litigation and consists of up to three full-time attorneys, a legal assistant and a paralegal.BACKGROUND: In existence since 1968, the HRC is one of the largest non-profit organizations in the country dedicated to ensuring equal opportunity in housing and achieving housing equity. The Staff Attorney will work in HRCs main office in Los Angeles, where it has a full-time staff of thirty-five and offers: (1) housing discrimination investigation, (2) outreach and education, (3) general landlord/tenant counseling, and (4) litigation. Our Litigation Department focuses on counteracting discrimination in housing and lending and includes impact and individual litigation on behalf of plaintiffs and organizations who have been injured because of discrimination and harassment.RESPONSIBILITIES:Under the supervision of the Director of Litigation, the Staff Attorney will be responsible for litigating housing discrimination cases in federal and state courts. The Staff Attorney will be involved in complex advocacy including impact litigation, representation of individuals in affirmative civil rights cases, and other direct client services.The Staff Attorney will investigate cases, draft complaints and briefs for motions, conduct discovery including taking and defending depositions, argue motions, and conduct trials. Besides significant litigation responsibility, the Staff Attorney may: Act as in-house counsel for HRC and its Departments.Engage in policy work and legislative advocacyDraft amicus briefs Represent HRC at meetings with public officials, committees, and working groups.Conduct fair housing presentations and trainings, and draft materials in support of these presentations and trainings.QUALIFICATIONS:California State Bar-certified applicants with one to five years of litigation experience. Candidates from the for-profit sector are welcome to apply but a sincere dedication to civil rights and social justice issues is required. Litigation experience, including taking depositions and drafting and arguing motions, preferred but not required.SKILLS: Analytical reasoning, legal research, persuasive written and oral argument, client interviewing, investigation, negotiation, ability to work under pressure with short timelines, creativity, ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds, and strong public speaking.
