POSITION SUMMARY:HIAS seeks twoImmigration LegalInternsto assist HIAS direct legal servicesprograms whichbenefit forcibly displaced immigrants seeking asylum and other relief in the United States. The internswill conduct research, writing and draft filings for submission to the Immigration Court, US Citizenship and Immigration Services, and state courts. Through this internship, interns will learn about US immigration law and the practice of law in a nonprofit setting.Theywill be supervised by the Staff Attorneys,Managing Attorney, and Associate Director, Pro Bono.This position isfull-time,unpaid butHIAS will collaborate with the candidate to pursue academic credit or a public interest stipend.A 10-12 week commitment is required.In order to be considered, please submit your resume, a cover letter and brief writing sample (10 pages or less, double spaced) along with your application.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Conducts thorough legal and factual research on topics assigned by Staff Attorneys.Writes memorandums, briefs and other documents in support of HIAS immigration legal cases.Research and develop materials to train Pro Bono Attorneys on substantive legal issues in immigration and asylum law.Develops declarations and application forms through interviews with clients.Assists the legal team in preparation and presentation of asylum claims (affirmative and defensive); special immigrant juvenile cases; U-visa, T-Visa, and other cases.Review, prepare, and finalize applications for client benefits submitted by Pro Bono Attorneys, including I-485 Applications for Adjustment of Status.Maintains records and contributes to program reports in compliance with any applicable grants or other agreements.Assist Pro Bono Attorney teams with client interview and client preparation of asylum claims.QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:Current law student(rising2L or 3L).Strong interest in asylum law and/or processing, human rights, and international law.Fluency in Spanish required;fluency in French or Russian a plus.Must be resourceful, thorough and analytical in order to develop information and obtain materials relevant to the research requested.Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills required.ABOUT US:HIAS is a global Jewish nonprofit organization working across five continents to ensure that refugees and displaced personsare protected.
