Our professors and laboratories have expertise in diverse fields, including neuroscience, genetics, physiology, psychology, primatology and anthropology.Job-Specific ResponsibilitiesSupervises 4.5 direct reports.This position handles all functions related to personnel and the graduate program (25 students), in addition to other responsibilities. This includes advertisement, hire and appointment process for all academic research, teaching, visiting, unpaid, and staff appointments; all related visa sponsorship (J-1, H-1B, permanent residency); all department payroll, except for senior faculty; teaching assignments for students and non-ladder faculty; research support for students; works closely w/director of undergraduate studies on annual course plans for non-ladder faculty.General administration:Develop, maintain and grow administrative structure, systems and processes that serve the needs of HEB faculty and their research groups, focusing on efficient and effective use of FAS resources.Serve as central source of information related to all academic, research, and faculty affairs, and human resources. Work and liaison with FAS and other University offices on department-related business.Represent the department on division-wide administrative committees.Plan and submit and monitor the department’s annual budget and oversee its financial operations.Handle all aspects of department academic and staff appointments; monitor all department payroll, except tenure-level.Serve as department representative or coordinator for space planning issues, IT updates or initiatives, telecom requests, security (keys, after-hours access, admin. systems), other FAS or University changes or initiatives.Academic AffairsOversees administrative work around hiring of academic, research and teaching appointees and staff. This includes job advertisement, search process, appointments, and visas.Work with director of undergraduate education to settle course plans for non-ladder faculty and teaching fellow assignments annually, and process all such appointments.Human Resources:Supervises 4.5 administrative staff members.Responsible for all human resource functions related to non-ladder faculty, research appointees, interns and staff. Handle independent contractor requests and issues.Works closely with the divisional academic affairs office on human resources matters related to academic or research appointees; this includes recruitment, immigration, onboarding, and leaves. Interpret University human resource policies and practices and advises faculty, administrators and researchers, as appropriate, to comply with Harvard and FAS policies and procedures.Sponsored Research:Oversees sponsored research proposal submission and grants management for faculty members, researchers and graduate students, working with financial associate (soon to be grants manager) and FAS or University offices to ensure compliance with University and funding agency regulations.
