OPPORTUNITY:
Counselors at Green Dot are responsible for providing counseling and guidance services to all students, with an emphasis on preparing students for high school and college. This includes conducting individual and small group counseling sessions for students. Experience in prevention, intervention, developmental and crisis counseling is highly desired. Our ideal candidate is hard-working, entrepreneurial, and possesses a strong desire to foster high levels of academic achievement with academically underserved students. We are looking for a school counselor who is passionate about middle school and excited to become a member of transformation work.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Promote a college going culture through various activities on and off campus
Conduct conflict mediation programs and promote safety for all students
Coordinate and implement dissemination of information to students, parents, and community members pertaining to college knowledge and high school readiness
Assist in the creation and implementation of social and emotional curriculum
Counsel individuals and small groups of students, including students with IEP counseling needs, toward social and emotional and academic growth
Provide direct support service to individual students, small groups, and classrooms
Serve as a member of the student support team which implements supports and interventions for students
Complete assessments, referrals, and counseling with students and families
Develop and maintain family outreach programs and community partnerships
Provide effective counseling strategies to students to replace negative behavior with appropriate behavior
Identify, report, and coordinate evidence-based interventions for targeted, at-risk students as outlined by Texas Education Agency (TEA), School Culture, and Compliance
Maintain student records to ensure students maintain appropriate academic placements
Organize and implement student field trips to promote college awareness
Support the school advisory program as a Level I and Level II intervention to address barriers to learning, cultivating a college going culture and promoting leadership and life skills
Offer student and parent workshops to provide information and assistance in preparing for high school and beyond
Participate in, coordinate, and conduct activities that contribute to the effective operation of the overall counseling program
Work collaboratively with school’s social worker and other academic and mental health support personnel to ensure student success
Conduct parent conferences to discuss student academic progress
Maintain professional standards and school environment that is productive, safe, and focused
Participate in Green Dot SE Texas and individual professional development
Participate in other events aimed at promoting or developing Green Dot Southeast Texas (i.e., student recruitment)
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s Degree, and Master’s Degree in LMSW, LCSW, LPC-I, or LPC (required)
Hold a valid Texas School Counselor Certification, or be enrolled in a TEA approved School Counselor Certification Program.
Minimum two years experience as a classroom teacher in a public or accredited private school (preferred)
Experience with individual and group counseling
A passion for improving urban middle schools and driving education reform
Experience working in a school setting
Proven management and team building skills
Ability to understand student maturity levels and the process of goal selection
Ability to help students gain an awareness of interests and abilities and to help them make course choices that will lead to appropriate careers commensurate with interests and abilities
Ability to understand test construction and interpret educational test data
Ability to motivate students and provide academic incentives for success
Excellent collaborative and organizational skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
