Overview

The Medical Records Coder codes and abstracts outpatient, emergency care, and/or ambulatory records. Determines appropriate code assignment, using ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 coding guidelines.

Education:

  • High School Diploma
  • Medical Terminology
  • Anatomy and Physiology via courses or equivalent
  • Educational Training in ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 Coding Systems
  • Preferred – One Year Coding in a Hospital Setting

Experience:

  • Coder I (Entry Level): Outpatient, Ambulatory, or Emergency Department
  • Coder II (2 years of Coding): Outpatient, Ambulatory, or Emergency Department

Licenses/Certificates/Registrations:

  • Coder I: No Credential required
  • Coder II: RHIT, RHIA, CPC, CCA, CCS-P
