General Purpose of the Production Manager:
The production manager is charged with operating the plant in manner that protects employees and the plant’s environmental obligations. The Production Manager directs the activities of the plant supervisors so that they execute the plant’s safety, environmental, and productivity initiatives to satisfy the operational plan, while, protecting the plant’s equipment and assets.

Essential Functions of the Production Manager:

Responsibilities that are requirements in order to perform the job:

  • Drives compliance of supervisor and plant personnel with all safety, environmental, and quality regulations and requirements
  • Implement annual operating plan that assures production requirements are met in a safe, environmentally sound, quality, and cost effective manner and identifies cost-saving opportunities
  • Overall responsibility for the plant in the absence of Plant Manager
  • Operate the plant in a manner that ensures employee safety and the protection of plant equipment
  • Protect the environment by training and monitoring supervisors on sound operating procedures and ensuring overall compliance
  • Schedule operations to include labor, overtime, and equipment to meet production demands
  • Maximize plant efficiencies, reduce costs and equipment wear, improve quality and safety conditions participate in operating and capital budgeting process
  • Train employees and supervisors to enhance safety and productivity
  • Maximize production efficiency by effectively utilizing plant equipment
  • Set clear expectations and drive accountability utilizing both positive and negative reinforcement techniques
  • Coordinate with maintenance and engineering to prioritize and schedule operations to maximize equipment reliability
  • Work with technical department to implement new/improved processes and to improve technical capabilities of staff and workforce to reduce cycle time in the reactor and on the cooling belts
  • Review operations data and provide direction to improve the plant’s productivity
  • Implement company policy to ensure the production department is in compliance with all policies and procedures
  • Participates in union contract negotiations and helps define language necessary for efficient plant operations
  • Develops the plant supervisors and employees to prevent injuries, accidents, and environmental incidents
  • Interacts with all members of the plant staff to attain safety, environmental, quality, and productivity goals
  • Forecasts hourly manning levels, changes to the work schedule
  • Maintains as much as possible, a positive relationship with the bargaining unit membership and officers
  • Maintains Compliance with ISO bodies, OSHA, and EPA

Supportive Functions of the Production Manager:

In addition to performance of the essential functions, this position may be required to perform a combination of supportive functions based on business needs:

  • Coordinates with supply chain, quality, and technical manager to ensure that intermediates and finished goods are properly sequenced and arrive at warehouse on time, properly labeled, and that packaging meets customer requirements
  • Completes and follows up on incident reports timely
  • Coordinates with maintenance manager to determine priorities for equipment repairs and servicing to support the production schedule
  • Ensures that the plant is clean and free of controllable hazards
  • Must be available for calls and troubleshooting after hours and on weekends/holidays when the plant is running

Education/Experience Guidelines:

  • 7 – 10 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment with a bachelor’s degree in a technical or operations management field OR 10-15 years’ experience in a chemical plant with no degree
