Responsibilities

Joining the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) means being part of the team focused on securing the Nation’s physical and cyber infrastructure against threats to public health and safety, economy, and national security. Within CISA, the Office of the Director provides leadership to the Agency’s efforts to defend civilian networks, secure federal facilities, manage systemic risk to National critical functions, and work with stakeholders to raise the security baseline of the Nation’s cyber and physical infrastructure.

Selected students will perform duties in business administration, business management, office management, financial management, external engagement/outreach, program management, and/or project management. Students may be placed in a wide variety of offices with differing functions across the agency. Duties and assignments will reflect the mission and the work of the assigned office and may be focused on traditional business/management support functions, or may be focused on mission support functions related to the security of critical or digital infrastructure.

Major duties in this Student Trainee position may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting program analysts, senior specialists and supervisor in conducting program functions, such as planning and organizing actions necessary to accomplish short and long program goals.
  • Analyzing simple problems such as changes in procedures, work flow, and business operations.
  • Using computer software to assist staff in tasks such as writing business procedures, designing flow charts, creating and maintaining spreadsheets or databases, designing data analysis and charts, and or creating/editing reports or briefing materials.
  • Assisting with the collection of data for studies, reports, and routine correspondence.
  • Assisting in maintaining filing system for office in accordance with Federal records keeping requirements.

  • Applicants who graduate college at the conclusion of the Spring 2021 semester may only be considered if they remain enrolled and are also accepted for enrollment for the Fall 2021 semester.
  • Your schedule during the academic year is negotiable. During school breaks and summers, travel to/from the official duty station and housing expenses, will be at the student’s expense.
  • Students are require to remain in good academic standing which is defined as initially possessing a grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher and maintaining it while employed in the Pathways Internship Program.
  • Interns are on a trial period throughout the course of the internship.
  • If interns successfully completes the internship requirements and they are converted to the competitive service, time spent in a trial period will count towards the required one year probationary period.

Qualifications
Pathways Internship Eligibility
You must have a minimum 2.5 GPA and be currently enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, on at least a half-time schedule as a student at an accredited college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs (e.g., graduate school, law school); or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a degree or certificate. Certificate programs must be one academic year in duration. Must meet the definition of a student throughout the duration of the appointment.

You qualify for the GS-03 grade level (starting salary $28,083.00) ifyou have completed one (1) full academic year of post-high school study from an accredited educational institution. (Copy of transcripts must be submitted)

You qualify for the GS-04 grade level (starting salary $31,526.00) ifyou have completed two (2) full academic years of post-high school study or an associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution. (Copy of transcripts must be submitted).

NOTE: GPAs are to be rounded to one decimal place. For example, 2.95 will round to 3.0 and 2.94 will round to 2.9. If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) were taken on a pass/fail or similar basis, your claim must be based on class standing or membership in an honor society. Please submit a college transcript(s) showing your grade point average for all four years of undergraduate study, including all transferred courses.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
