Colorado Legal Services is the sole statewide provider of free civil legal services to low-income and senior individuals in Colorado. Our Low Income Taxpayer Clinic is seeking a Clinic Director who will provide direct services in tax controversy cases, conduct community outreach and education, and manage grant reporting. All cases involve federal or Colorado income tax, including IRS audits, IRS and Colorado Department of Revenue administrative appeals, and U.S. Tax Court cases. This person could work from any CLS office in the state, some travel is required.Director duties and responsibilities:Provide extensive representation (including litigation) in cases involving issues such as child-based tax credits, offers in compromise, innocent spouse, tax-related identity theft or cancellation of debt income;Persistent follow up with clients and agencies to maintain case deadlines;Frequent monitoring of administrative, statutory and case law tax developments;Supervise part-time LITC Paralegal (based in Colorado Springs);Design or adapt materials for and facilitate community outreach and education;Maintain contact with organizations serving low-income adults to share information about CLS services;Occasional travel within the state for outreach events;Gather information to prepare and submit grant reports in a timely manner;Participation in US Tax Court calendar call program (2 -3 times a year) held in Denver;Attendance at annual LITC Conference held in Washington D.C. each December.Requirements: Must be a licensed attorney (barred in any state). Sensitivity to the legal needs of poor people and minorities is required. Ideal candidates will have strong writing and communication skills as well as the ability to handle a demanding caseload while building collaborative relationships with clients, staff, and the community. Experience in tax law is preferred but not required. Some travel is required.Tracking
