GAS SYSTEM WORKER I
Pay Range: $22.91-$32.24

NATURE OF WORK
This is semi-skilled and skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and construction of distribution lines and related components of the municipal gas distribution system. Work involves the application of gas distribution knowledge and skills to the construction and maintenance of service lines, mains, and appurtenances. Incumbents initially assist more senior gas system workers; as experience is obtained they work more independently. Supervision is received from an administrative superior with work being subject to review.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following examples of work are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive
Assists in the maintenance, repair, and construction of gas mains and service lines; May also assist with the work on relief valves, regulators, meters, and related appurtenances in systems. Performs manual labor; cuts, fits, fuses, lays, and taps service pipes and mains; May install cathodic line protection. Lays pipe to repair and extend gas mains and to install and repair service pipes between mains and residences. Operates light and heavy construction equipment including trenchers, backhoes, and compressors; services and performs minor repairs and maintenance on equipment. Inspects materials, equipment, and supplies on hand; may read meters; responds to after hour emergency calls. Perform other work which is consistent with the essential functions of the job.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of the standards methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of a municipal gas distribution system. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Ability to perform prolonged manual labor. Ability to understand oral and written instructions and to interpret diagrams and plans. Skill in the use and care of the tools, equipment, vehicles and materials used in the work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or equivalent including or supplemented by training in the mechanical trades; some training and experience related to gas main construction, maintenance and repair work resulting in certification in plastic fusion; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the knowledge, abilities, and skills:

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Employee must possess and maintain of a valid Nebraska Driver’s License when operating a vehicle. When operating equipment that falls under the Nebraska Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) status, the employee is required to possess and maintain the proper license and endorsements as a mandatory condition of employment Must obtain a plastic fusion certification within one year of hire.
