The organization wants everyone to not only have a seat at the table, but to know that their presence and input makes the organization stronger.The PositionThe Community Health Cases Manager will work with community-led organizations and help manage and guide our community exposure litigation. They will do this mainly by using Californias Proposition 65 public health law, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, to hold companies accountable for industrial pollution and to require that they reduce or eliminate their toxic emissions. The Community Health Cases Manager will be a liaison between CEH program staff, CEHs legal counsel, and residents and leaders from fenceline communities who partner with CEH on legal action. The Community Health Cases Manager will work with community leaders to offer technical assistance, strategic capacity building, and organizing support. Over the life of a legal case, they will utilize CEHs core strategies (science, policy, communications, legal action, and corporate engagement) as appropriate, maintain open lines of communication with leaders regarding litigation specifics and developments, and clearly represent community needs and interests with CEHs attorneys. This position is an exciting opportunity to work with our Program Director to build and manage a small but growing facet of a program focused on detoxifying outdoor and indoor air caused by industrial pollution in communities.Since March 2020, CEH staff have been working remotely from home during the local shelter-in-place orders.CEHs primary priority during this time is to keep our staff safe and we are strictly following city and county orders, mandates, and guidelines related to COVID-19.In the future, if/when CEHs Oakland office reopens and travel is considered safe under widely accepted, health-protective measures, the Community Health Cases Manager will spendup to 30% of their timetraveling in the State of California for meetings and convenings with community partners.Position Type: Full timeStart date: Position will be open until filled.Reports to: CEHs Illegal Toxic Threats (ITT) Program DirectorPosition Time Frame: This position will be a 2-year commitment with the potential to be extended, dependent on funding.Primary Duties and ResponsibilitiesUphold and honor the Principles of Environmental Justice and the Jemez Principles of Democratic Organizing.Learn and follow CEHs Community Partner Protocol.In collaboration with the ITT Program Director, manage programmatic and administrative tasks of the community exposure work.Schedule meetings with affected community members, community based organizations, CEHs legal counsel, and regulatory agencies (e.g. AQMD, DTSC, CARB, Water Board); as needed.Communicate outreach progress and case development to the Director and ITT team.Ensure respectful collaboration with and inclusive, meaningful participation of community leaders from initiation of a legal case through its conclusion.Conduct investigative research related to industrial sources of pollution for new potential casework.Work with Science Director to create technical documents related to legal cases, including but not limited to: toxic chemical profiles (incorporating relevant information such as health effects and routes of exposure), air, soil, and/or water sampling protocols and summaries, lab result summaries,etc.Collaborate with partners to organize community and organizational partner meetings to inform stakeholders about potential and ongoing cases. As needed, ensure these meetings have snacks and childcare, and are facilitated in an inclusive manner (e.g. with a focus on language justice and accessibility for differently-abled persons). Request support for these meetings from other CEH staff when necessary.Perform outreach in communities, which may involve presenting at a community meeting, facilitating phone and virtual video conference meetings, managing the mailing of flyers and educational materials to residents, and door-to-door knocking with residents.Receive training to utilize an x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzer, used for screening soil samples in-office.Maintain confidentiality of cases and stakeholders.Upon request from community stakeholders, research and connect them to other organizational contacts or additional resources that may be needed which are not part of CEHs expertise (e.g.housing or immigrant rights legal aid).Represent CEH at resident-led or CBO-led meetings, regulatory agency hearings,working group meetings, and other meetings and convenings on toxic exposure issues in California.In collaboration with CEHs communication team, draft op-eds, press releases, action emails, and provide other communication support related to the work.Maintain detailed and accurate records of program-related data.Develop and manage learning and evaluation methods for the capacity building and legal work performed by the ITT in Communities program.Assist in preparing grant funding reports for the community exposure ITT work.Required Qualifications/Experience:CEH is looking for an experienced project manager who sets high standards for themselves and for those around them. Qualifications include:Strong commitment to and understanding of social and environmental justice principles and history of professional work applications of a racial, environmental, and economic justice lens.Ability to communicate and collaborate with diverse groups, work with a multicultural workforce, and maintain sensitivity to and appreciation of cultural differences.At least 5 years of relevant work experience.Experience managing multi-faceted projects.Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.Meticulous attention to detail and excellent problem-solving skills.Ability to work independently in goal setting, and workload prioritization.Research skills, including a natural curiosity and tenacity for thorough research.Positive and creativewillingness to take risks and try innovative new ideas.Experience and success working in a role leading or supporting grassroots environmental justice efforts.On occasion, the ability to work some weekend and evening hours for community engagement meetings.California-based (Bay Area or Los Angeles).Must hold a California Driver’s License (CEH utilizes rental or car share services, e.g. ZipCar, for necessary travel).Ability to travel 25-30% of the time, throughout the state of CA (mainly in Southern CA) once travel restrictions are lifted and non-remote work is safe.Proficiency with Excel, Word, and Outlook.Preferred QualificationsExperience advocating alongside disadvantaged and environmental justice communities in regulatory forums and engaging local, regional, and state agencies.Hold an existing network of professional allies and advocates to draw upon for expertise in pollution prevention, legal and policy analysis, toxicology, and exposure assessment.Experience with policy analysis, advocacy, and/or issue-based campaign planning experience.Background in toxic chemicals work.Experience in meeting facilitation.Bilingual in Spanish and English.What to expect from CEHSalary range: $58,000 $63,000, commensurate with experience.Full benefits, including 401k match (up to 5% of salary), health insurance, vacation, sick time and paid holidays.A team with a sense of justice and a sense of humor.A low-ego, high-performance culture and flexible work environment.Working Conditions and Job SettingPhysical ability to type and use a computer is essential.Infrequent periodic lifting of up to 20 pounds is required.Ability to travel 25-30% of the time….. click apply for full job details
