OverviewAbout Caring Across Generations:Caring Across Generations (CAG) is a national campaign working to make care more affordable and accessible at every stage of life, while making sure caregivers are treated with respect and dignity. Founded in 2011 by Sarita Gupta and Ai-jen Poo, our campaign is focused on creating change in three ways: organizing a powerful movement of the Caring Majority – the majority of Americans who are directly affected by the need for care, fighting for groundbreaking policy at the state and federal level, and changing hearts and minds through storytelling and cultural organizing. We were behind the historic win to extend federal minimum wage and overtime protections to home care workers. In 2017 helped pass the nations first Family Caregiver benefit in the state of Hawaii. And in 2018, helped Washington state create the nation’s first universal public program for long-term care.About the Position:Caring Across Generations seeks an experienced, strategic and talented Government Relations Director who will advance our legislative priorities and policy solutions to improve the state of care in this country.The Government Relations Director will work at the intersection of government affairs and the fight to enact policy that invests inour care infrastructure, especially for family caregivers in communities of color and other communities that struggle to find and afford the care they need.As a senior member of the Caring Across team at a moment of tremendous opportunity, you will oversee our work with elected officials, and direct our advocacy and policy work at the local, state and federal level.You will work with colleagues who are as dedicated and passionate about care, caregivers, and care workers as you are; who care deeply about justice and equity; and who, like you, are bold, strategic, and take responsibility for achieving substantial progress toward our mission every year.You will leverage existing relationships, build new ones, and work with our state and national partners to create meaningful and mutually beneficial collaborations that advance shared policy goals and win big for family caregivers.ResponsibilitiesProvide strategic oversight to the Government Relations/Policy team and is responsible for the government relations strategies that advance the mission and goals of Caring Across Generations with local, state, and federal elected officials.Work with our team and elected officials to introduce at least one piece of federal legislation in 2021 or 2022.Establish and maintain productive relationships with elected and appointed officials and advocatefor Caring Across policy priorities with those leaders.Understand, strengthen and communicate,Caring Across Generations priorities to government officials, local and national partners, and our care constituency on key legislative issues related to caregivers and consumers,the care infrastructure and the care economy.Keep senior leadership apprised of pertinent legislative issues, external factors and policy proposals and actions that could impact our constituency and the campaignSupervise a team of at least threestaff members as well as the hiring and training of new staff, including conducting quarterly and annual reviews, providing team members guidance and support with professional development.Work collaboratively with other teams at Caring Across Generations to advance our shared campaign agenda and strategy.Bring a racial and gender equity lens to all of our legislative strategy and policy proposalsAnalyze legislation and collaborate with otherteam members to determine positions that are most relevant for or help advance Caring Across Generations.Prepare communication to key stakeholders, including the campaign founder and director, regarding key legislative changes; oversee the development of materials in support of the campaigns legislative agenda, such as talking points, legislative summaries, factsheets, testimony, reports and letters.Seek out and create opportunities to raise Caring Acrosss profile and policy solutions with federal offices.Represent Caring Across at coalition meetings, briefings and policy forums.to achieve the best policy outcomes for family caregivers, consumers and care workers.When called upon, represent Caring Across as a spokesperson with media, donors, and the public.QualificationsWere seeking candidates who excel in relationship-building, are results-oriented, can be self-directed yet collaborative, and have strong project management skills. You should have:7+years of professional experience in state or federal affairs, advocacy, policy, or politics, including five or more in government relations or issue advocacy with local, state, or federal legislative bodiesDeep understanding of how state and federal legislative processes work and can successfully navigate those processes to achieve our mission and policy objectivesStrong knowledge of and deep experience with at least one of the following policy areas: aging, childcare, paid family medical leave or health careThe ability to create legislative strategy, effectively advocate, lead a team, and integrate collaboratively with organizing, digital, and communications teams to reach our campaign objectivesA proven track-record of leadership of government relation teams and strategies.Commitment to developing policy solutions that tear down racial, gender, and economic inequitiesA commitment to building a multicultural, anti-racist campaignProven ability at building strong relationships and effective partnerships, as well as demonstrated skill with persuasion and influenceSupervision experience, with remote supervision experience a plus.Communicator with strong analytical, writing, editing, and verbal skills who knows how to connect with broad and diverse stakeholders, including federal and state legislative offices.TravelBecause the person we hire can work from any location in the continental U.S., the director will be expected to travel to Washington, D.C. regularly once it is safe to do so. Additional travel to help advance state legislation, attend conferences, and participate in Caring Across Generations gatherings will be expected.Tracking
