Job purposeAlliance for Justice (AFJ), a national association of 120 organizations dedicated to advancing justice and democracy, and Alliance for Justice Action Campaign (AFJAC), an affiliated advocacy organization, are seeking a Legislative Counsel.For forty years, AFJ has raised awareness about the importance of the courts, fight for a more equitable society on behalf of environmental, consumer, civil and womens rights, immigrant, and health groups, and fight the racism embedded in our justice system. Alliance for Justice is premised on the belief that all Americans have the right to secure justice in the courts and to have their voices heard when the government makes decisions that affect their lives.AFJ has two primary programs:Our Justice Program focuses on ensuring that the federal judiciary advances core constitutional values, preserves human rights and unfettered access to the courts, and adheres to the even-handed administration of justice for all. An essential part of this program is Building the Bench, which is designed to develop and help confirm a pool of highly-qualified federal judicial nominees as well as lead a complementary and coordinated campaign to highlight the importance of filling vacancies;Our Bolder Advocacy Program works with nonprofits and foundations to help them navigate the rules surrounding 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and PACs so they can be more courageous and effective in their advocacy.AFJAC promotes a national conversation about the importance of the courts through advocacy, research, and mobilizing progressive advocates and voters. We engage voters and the public to fight for judges who will protect the rights of all Americans and hold accountable senators who confirm judges who will roll back the clock on rights and liberties. We conduct research and arm advocates, elected officials, political leaders, and the media with the tools to elevate the courts during elections.The Legislative Counsel will have experience relating to the broad range of legal policy issues handled by AFJ.The Legislative Counsel will report directly to the Director of Justice Programs.Duties and ResponsibilitiesDevelop strategy, set research priorities, and draft, review, and edit research materials for all AFJ projects related to the courts, including projects connected to judicial nominees and Access to Justice projects.Coordinate and staff key meetings with Congressional offices.Represent AFJ to other organizations as part of coalitions on justice issues.Work with the Bolder Advocacy team on democracy-related issues, particularly as they relate to tax-exempt organizations. Issues include campaign finance reform, rights to lobby and associate, donor privacy, and role of 501(c)(4) organizations.Advise the Legal Director and AFJ President on all issues related to democracy and the courts.Participate in all aspects of vetting judicial nominees.Assist Director of Communications with preparation for AFJ Presidents public appearances.Help conduct briefings for reporters, academics, the Board of Directors, member organizations, and other audiences.Draft substantive work of the justice programs including reports, op-eds, and fact sheets.Produce substantive materials for grassroots education, media, legal advisory committees, and other audiences for AFJ justice programs and campaigns.Oversee research campaigns, including coordination with law firms, outside counsel, law students, and non-attorney volunteers.Speak at legal and policy conferences, and brief academics, Congressional staff, Board of Directors, member organizations and other audiences. Other duties as assigned.QualificationsJ.D. and 10 plus years of experience in legal policy or advocacy work;Hill or lobbying experience strongly preferred;Exceptional analytical, writing and speaking skills;Demonstrated commitment to public interest and civil rights law;Experience in civil rights, labor, environmental, consumer and/or constitutional law preferred;Ability to work quickly under pressure, with shifting deadlines and priorities;Attention to detail; Long hours and some travel required;Ability to inspire and work collegially with others; andStrong interpersonal skills and positive attitude.Tracking
