Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ARDMS/AART)
Location: 88th Medical Group, Bldg #830, 4881 Sugar Maple Drive, WPAFB OH 45
Work Schedule: Monday will be Monday-Friday, 9 hours including a 1-hour unbillable lunch period. The time range for shifts will be within 0 depending on mission requirements. On-call hours for the section are weekdays 1 and weekends/holidays 24/7. The schedule is based on mission requirements but is normally required for 1-2 weeks out of the month per member. Possible night or weekend shifts as mission dictates, not to exceed 80 hours every two weeks with a 10 day advanced notice
Degree/Education (5.2.4): Certificate; Graduate from an academic program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
Certifications in addition to Basic Life Support (5.2.3):
o HCWs shall maintain current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers in accordance with American Heart Association or in an equivalent course based on published national guidelines for BLS, which includes both learning and psychomotor skills portions.
o Web-based classes do not meet required standards. Certification is not available at the MTF’s Education and Training section.
o The Contractor shall not bill, and the Government shall not pay, for any time HCWs spend on certification training.
o Failure of the HCW to obtain training does not release the Contractor from the contract requirement.
Experience: One year experience as a Sonographer
Board Certification (126.96.36.199.4): Certified by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) in the specialty identified in the TO.
• Correlate the patient’s clinical history with the requested examination to be performed and obtain the results from previous pertinent diagnostic tests to correlate with the ultrasound study.
• Consult with staff physicians from a variety of specialties such as obstetrics, gynecology, cardiology and surgery regarding the patient’s pertinent past medical history, preliminary diagnosis, and condition so it correlates with the ultrasound examination.
• Recognize normal anatomic variants. Also, recognize anatomic changes created by medical and surgical procedures.
• Document arrival, departure, and completed tests as required by MTF policy. Send appropriate image series to the radiologist for reading according to MTF protocol.
• Perform system warm ups, calibrations and quality control tasks according to manufacturer and MTF policy. Recognize artifacts and equipment errors and notify designated Government personnel of outlying values.
• Explain process to patient, and instructs and assists patient in assuming physical position for examination.
• Assist in the compiling and archiving of records for procedures performed
• Observe and report to the radiologist any symptoms which have direct bearing on the patient’s condition as a result of adverse reaction to contrast media and inform the radiologist of any condition requiring his/her attention. Recognize the need for and initiate emergency measures for critical situations such as respiratory or cardiac arrest.
• Identify abnormalities during testing and determine need for additional scans of affected area.
• Perform a full range of diagnostic ultrasonic examinations as appropriate to the discipline specified in the TO.
HCW Duties (5.1 Task 1):
Trains and precepts ultrasound Phase II students and permanent party members needing duty qualification training.
Maintains comprehensive knowledge and the skills to educate students on the basic concepts of ultrasound anatomy, imaging techniques and exam procedures.
Stays abreast to new techniques and processes to improve the overall student’s education. Evaluates student exams and techniques.
Documents progression and signs off completion of tasks required for Phase II graduation/completion.
Evaluates permanent party technologist duty qualification training. Reviews images with member and gives constructive feedback.
Communicates with Ultrasound NCOIC or member’s supervisor on progress of member in up-grade training for duty qualification training. Performs hands-on clinical training for Phase II students and newly assigned permanent staff in accordance with Phase II curriculum and department standard operating procedures.
Teaches proper usage and functions of the ultrasound machine, transducers, high level disinfectant machines (i.e. Trophon), Picture and Archival Communication Systems (PACS).
Demonstrates proper patient positioning, proper transducer selection, and imaging protocols for diagnostic ultrasound imaging.
Assists with proper technical factor selection to achieve optimal sonographic quality.
Educates students and staff on proper sterile techniques, consent, and contraindications, as well as the administration of contrast to patients during studies.
Ensures adherence to American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) standards guidelines.
Demonstrates location of anatomy and pathology on completed ultrasounds.
Observes performance of ultrasound examinations to ensure correct positioning, technical factor selection and safety of patients.
Completes student performance evaluations and weekly feedback forms.
Communicates with Ultrasound Phase II Course Supervisor on progress of trainees.
Communicates performance feedback to include discussing strengths and weaknesses, and sets target improvement goals.
Identifies and refers students to the course supervisor who are not satisfactorily meeting minimum clinical requirements.
Evaluates permanent party technologist duty qualification training.
Reviews images with member and gives constructive feedback.
Communicates with Ultrasound NCOIC or member’s supervisor on progress of member in up-grade training for duty qualification training.
Performs administrative functions, to include record archiving and retrieval.
Performs periodic assessment and update of established protocols and screening devices.
Requests transfer of obtained images on laser discs for future retrieval and review.
Ability perform the technologist aspect (setup, cleanup, and post procedural patient care) of US guided biopsies, Needle Localizations and MSK pain injections.
