The Director, Executive Communications is a key member of the Corporate Communication team, which is responsible for developing and executing global communications strategies and programs that will protect and enhance AbbVie’s reputation. This role reports to the Senior Director, Executive and Philanthropy Communications.

As a senior communications leader, the Director, Executive Communications will create, manage and execute executive thought leader platforms and strategic communications, taking a lead role on chief executive officer communications. This role will interact with members of the company’s Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and other senior leaders to help deliver integrated communications that support company’s strategic priorities.

This is a highly visible, fast-paced position that is both internally and externally facing. Accordingly, the successful candidate should be adaptable, able to reprioritize and shift gears quickly, comfortable in a high-pressure environment and be politically savvy, diplomatic, responsive and mature. A key requirement of this role is the ability to maintain confidentiality and have a low ego (no need to take credit for executive messages). This person should both be a strong writer, be able to master an executive’s voice for clear and authentic communications, and have the ability to direct external partners in the development of executive communications.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Lead communications for the CEO and support communications for the Chief Legal Officer and CFO as needed.
    • Develop and drive strategic CEO communications to inform and inspire a wide variety of audiences.
    • Help conceptualize, research and develop executive communication plans to support AbbVie’s mission and directly further business objectives for these executives.
    • Work directly with the executives as a strategist to support both internal and external communication, focusing on opportunities relating to employee engagement, thought leadership (speaking engagements, articles, etc.), and mainstream and social media.
    • Work closely with other AbbVie executive communication leads to maintain a coordinated approach to enterprise-wide executive communication.
    • Proactively manage relationships with senior executives and influence others with or without direct authority.
    • Enhance employee engagement by creating compelling executive communications. Work closely with other teams on internal and external events to maximize executive visibility in the right way.
    • Partner with the Enterprise Communications team on key events such as:
      • Leadership Forum
      • All-Employee Meeting
      • Chairman’s Awards

Skills required include

  • A demonstrated ability to quickly capture an executive’s voice and think creatively about how to help senior executives show up authentically to a diversity of internal and external stakeholders in a wide variety of channels.
  • Ability to champion communications strategies and plans, particularly innovative and novel ideas, with executives.
  • Experience helping create successful social media strategies for senior level executives. Demonstrated experience liaising with the executive on content and cadence of postings.
  • Exceptional writing and research skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and have a low ego (no need to take credit for executive messages).
  • A creative thinker who strives to think outside the box but always to the benefit of the business.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of AbbVie, the business, global issues and ability to clearly articulate AbbVie’s mission, strategy, and goals.
  • Highly organized, with attention to detail, adherence to deadlines, and ability to work under pressure with multiple, shifting priorities.
  • Comfortable operating in an agile environment, but also possess solid experience successfully navigating the complexities of a large organization.
  • Experience managing external partnerships to maximize the company’s investment in those resources.
  • Possess a thorough understanding/awareness of leading/emerging PR tactics and techniques to maximize impact.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (emphasis in communications, marketing, business, public relations or journalism preferred).
  • 15+ experience in a high-level business or communications environment.

  • Experience in a communication role working with and advising highest levels of executive leadership, including provide counsel in difficult situations
  • Experience working in the healthcare sector
  • Track record of developing and executing communications campaigns that meet objectives
  • Exceptional writing, creative and problem-solving skills with ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Crisis management experience
  • Demonstrated ability to stay calm in high pressure situations
  • Ability to manage external agencies/vendors
  • Ability to derive clarity out of ambiguous situations
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and comfort forging internal alliances across geographies
